Two of Everything

In the world of data storage, there must always be a system of redundancy. Not only can we not afford to lose data, but we also cannot afford to lose our ability to access our data at any given time. This is why the rule of N + 1 is so critical.

The N + 1 Redundancy rule is very simple. There needs to be one more than you need of everything. Do you need one generator to run the facility in an emergency? You´d better have two. Do you need 40 back–up battery (UPS) units? Better have some extras on hand. Do you use Qwest as an internet provider? Better sign up with Verizon as well.

At X–helion, we apply N + 1 to everything possible. We have redundant cooling towers, power sources, hot–swappable batteries, ISPs, chiller pumps, cooling–tower pumps, etc. We also switch between the units regularly to ensure that each continues to function properly.
